# Background

From a discussion in [Core Devs Call 17](https://github.com/celestiaorg/CIPs/issues/201), we will need a CIP to reduce block time from 12 to 6 seconds.

# Benefits

This reduction in block time doubles throughput on Celestia!

2MB every 12 seconds → 2MB every 6 seconds.

# Open questions

Do we need to modify ADR-19? I don’t think so, as this will go live after year 1.

# Next steps

If this proposal has enough consensus, I will write a CIP to formalize it.
